Investment Services

Comprehensive Financial Planning works with you to find the right mix of risk and reward in your portfolio. We measure your portfolio's performance and compare it to a benchmark consisting of several indexes. We combine the performance of all your accounts into one comprehensive statement.

we are fee onlyComprehensive Financial Planning has discretionary authority over the client’s portfolio. Comprehensive Financial Planning has no custody of client’s assets, only trading authority. Because we are fee-only, we take no commission and have the flexibility to act in your best interest under your terms. Being fee-only enables me to provide a fiduciary service to my clients without the conflicts of interest inherent to commissioned and fee-based advisors.

As a Registered Investment Advisor, Stan Johnson and Comprehensive Financial follow the strictest standards including SEC regulations, disclosure of compensation, business background and the legal fiduciary standard to act in the client’s best interest at all times.

Comprehensive Financial Planning provides you the benefit of our continuing study of economic conditions, securities markets and independent analysis of financial assets. After reviewing the Confidential Personal Financial Profile that you fill out, we work with you to produce an Investment Policy Statement (IPS) that documents the following information:

  • Target returns expressed in percent or relative to a given index
  • Risk tolerance and expected portfolio volatility and loss threshold
  • Liquidity requirements (cash for emergency fund or specific need)
  • Time horizon (short, intermediate or long-term)
  • Asset Allocation that specifies weightings of major asset classes
  • Laws and regulations (mostly just for retirement plans)
  • Tax considerations (income, capital gains, estate)
  • Unique client preferences and circumstances

We primarily use actively managed, no-load mutual funds in our portfolios. Where tax efficiency is extremely important or for specific asset classes, we may use passive index funds or exchange traded funds (ETFs). The types of investments we use include:

  • Stock funds (domestic and foreign)
  • Bond funds (corporate, government, mortgage-backed, high and low yield, domestic and foreign)
  • Money-market funds and certificates of deposit (CDs)
  • Real estate investment trusts (REITS)
  • Commodity index funds
  • Bear or long-short mutual funds

Emphasis is placed upon building a diversified portfolio that lowers volatility without sacrificing returns. We incorporate this risk reduction strategy by investing in multiple fund styles and asset classes that don’t always increase and decrease in value at the same time.

Because Comprehensive Financial Planning is independent, we can find the best brokerage services for our clients. For example, we use TD Ameritrade Institutional for our investment platform, offering a broad range of options. We use several independent sources for economic, market and security analysis. These independent sources have no hidden agendas. One of our advisors, Litman Gregory, has been in business since 1987 and manages around $6 billion of assets for high net worth and institutional clients.

Stan Johnson: "The only one who is going to tell me what to do for my client is my client. Being independent enables me to find the best investments for my clients from the whole universe of those available, not just from the ones available from one particular firm."
